The levels of warfarin as a protectuion against strokes is probably lower than that required to clear a clot. I had a DVT about10 years ago at 45 caused by circulation restriction rather than age) and was on high levels for several weeks. However change in lifestyle can also change the effectiveness of warfarin - has he started taking less alcohol (or more) eating less or more etc. As uit's been caught early everything should be OK.
References :
DVT is potentially life threatening in anyone at any age.

While Warfarin is used to thin the blood and help to prevent blood clots, if his Warfarin level drops too low then he can become at risk.

The levels of Warafrin fluctuate almost daily in .

Hopefully your grandfather will be ok. I send him very best wishes.
References :
If he has developed a DVT while on warfarin then there is a real problem.

DVT can have small pieces of the clot break off and travel through the bloodstream to cause heart attack or stroke.

You are correct in expecting the warfarin to prevent this.

Hospital is the best place for him until they remove the DVT - either by surgery or medication - and get his warfarin levels sorted out.
References :
In elderly, body movement and blood circulation is impaired and that can cause DVT. DVT can cause strokes since the clot can travel and lodge itself in some capillary of the brain causing ischemic stroke.

Warfarin is a blood thinner and helps in blood circulation. Let the doctor and the other health professionals do their job. While it is good to be educated, there is no use in worrying.
References :
It can be very serious. Thankfully he's getting help. Warfarin does prevent clots if proper levels are maintained. Even on meds, clots can form and cause strokes, heart attacks, pulmonary embolism, loss of limbs at times. I'll say a prayer for your Grandpa.
