Is there any connection between the deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism?

What is the difference between a pulmonary embolus and pulmonary infarct?

Deep Vein Thrombosis

Only about half of the people with deep vein thrombosis have symptoms. The symptoms may include:

* Swollen area of the leg.
* Pain or tenderness in the leg. The pain is usually in one leg and may be felt only when standing or walking.
* Increased warmth in the area of the leg that is swollen or in pain.
* Red or discolored skin.

Pulmonary Embolism

Some people find out that they have deep vein thrombosis only after the clot has moved from the leg and traveled to the lung (pulmonary embolism). The symptoms may include:

* Chest pain when you take a deep breath
* Shortness of breath

    Yes there is a connection. The deep vein thrombosis or blood clot in the extremities can precipitate a pulmonary embolism or clot in the lungs
    The difference between a pulmonary embolism and a infarct is that the infarct is the result of the clot in the lung and it means that circulation in that area is cut off.

    Yes, there is a connection. As you know, DVT usually takes place in the leg. If this blood clot happens to break loose, and travels to the lungs, then you have pulmonary embolism.

    Hello,
    Are we doing our homework, here? DVT can result in thrombus formation. The thrombus can then break off, & travel (Embolus). The embolus will likely get caught in the arteries of the lungs (pulmonary). An infarction is a blockage. In this case, resulting either from Emboli, or haemorrhage. If your teacher rewards you w/carrot cake. I expect a piece. (LOVE carrot cake!!)
