Its been a long time since I heard the radio play, but if I remember right this was done to "terraform" the Earth and make it more liveable for the alien species, perhaps they emmited something much like earth plants do (taking in Nitrogen, emmiting Oxygen), maybe the aliens need to breathe a diffrent gas.
