where does thrombosis most commonly occur? Thanks!
The most common site is in the leg or the calf. After surgery that requires a person to be on bedrest only, the inactivity can cause the blood in the lower leg or calf muscle to pool. This is why patients need to wear anti-embolic stockings and of automatic compression devices to stimulate blood flow/circulation. Sometimes, depending on the surgery, patients will be placed on a heparin drip ( Intravenous) or are given an injection of heparin into the tummy region. Blood clots can break apart or travel through the circulatory system which can cause several serious problems, even death. But, blood clots can originate from other areas of the body. I hope that this helps.

The legs are a prime site because of the slow down in blood flow there. The blood is pushed up the legs by a series of valves.
